Tis’ the season’
Tis’ the season to ___________… each person has their own idea on how to finish that sentence. Some of you didn’t even want to read this once you saw the header. Some want to slap any person who says it’s their favorite time of year. More and more often people are getting overwhelmed with the concept of Christmas. You might hear: It just seems like a lot of work doesn’t it? And when did they start playing Christmas Carol’s in October? Then there is the financial stress, the weight I’m sure to gain, the lines at the mall, post office, and Toys’R’Us; and Church - Don’t even get me started on that… people that never go during the year show up, taking my parking space, my seat, it’s so over crowded, you have to actually get there early – sheesh. And why couldn’t God have given Jesus a summer birthday? This is not all together that convenient with my busy schedule. We rush around trying to accomplish all on our ‘to do’ list; and we simply don’t ‘feel’ in the Christmassy mood. We panic at the inquisition of questions that come: “Have you gotten all your Christmas shopping done?” We smile politely instead of saying what we really think… “Scrooge you, I haven’t even started!” Are you seriously that jolly St. Nick, cause I’m just not really feeling it!!!!!
Many of us relate; the challenge then becomes what our attitude is about Christmas-how we perceive it is up to us. The word Advent means “to come” or “the coming”, it’s about having something to look forward to, about someone we are excited to see coming. It is easy to get overwhelmed during ‘the season’, so when we do, we can take a time out (time) and remember what it is we are preparing for (His coming). We can be intentional about not only ‘the spirit’, but our spirit! We can wrap ourselves not in presents, but in HIS presence. Tis’ the season to spend time and presence in eager anticipation of HE who is to come… our very best friend, who wants to spend his birthday with us! - That is so cool! I can hardly wait!
