Ho Ho Holy Advent Batman… It’s time to Think Pink… JOYFULLY!
Last week, I had the awesome opportunity to speak at a Theology on Tap Event here in the Valley. I have always loved the young adult age group- they truly make my soul dance with Joy. Now, let me draw you a mental picture of the night. The event is held at a bar. The lovely waitress fills out her sexy ensemble in a way that would make anyone blush. There is loud music, food, laughter and spirits. I have since decided that I am going to require alcoholic beverages at all my speaking venues. I might sound more prophetic if the audience sees two of me at a time!
Anyway, in this particular setting for an Advent reflection; I found myself being very inspired by the thoughts and insight of the group, not to mention they make me LOL! We discussed the:
1. Historical Exegesis of Advent (581 feast of St. Marin; Nov 11th; 600 Pope Gregory associated 4 weeks with Nov.30th St. Andrew);
2. Theological Hermeneutics (Jesus and the 2nd Coming; brought about in the Middle Ages).
3. The Advent Wreath- (how in northern Europe in the deep of winter people lit candles on wheel shaped bundles of evergreen symbolizing light in dark winter, The three candles are religious symbolism relating to how purple dye was once so rare only Kings could afford it (Jesus-King). The three purple candles symbolic of: faith (prophets); love (angels); peace; (wise men) and a white candle often placed in the middle representing HOPE (Jesus)! And how the third week of Advent was the PINK candle associated with joy. Then I invited questions. A tall, muscular gentleman who had just come in spoke up; “What is the symbolism behind the color PINK on the third Advent Candle? I stammered… “Um, that’s a GREAT question!” One I myself could not remember the answer to. (Note to self: only invite questions you know the answers to). I jokingly said; “Maybe cause pink is associated with girls- pure joy! They weren’t buying it, so I went home and did my homework; here is what I found:
Historically, the primary sanctuary color of Advent is Purple. This is the color associated with penitence and fasting, as well as, the color of royalty to welcome the Advent of the King (Jesus). The purple of Advent is also the color of suffering used during Lent and Holy Week. This points to an important connection between Jesus’ birth and death. The nativity, the Incarnation, cannot be separated from the crucifixion. The purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world, of the “Word made flesh” and dwelling among us is to reveal God and His grace to the world through Jesus’ life and teaching, but also through his suffering, death, and resurrection. To reflect this emphasis, originally Advent was a time of penitence and fasting, much as the Season of Lent and so shared the color of Lent. The third Sunday came to be a time of rejoicing when fasting was almost over (in some traditions it is called Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin word for “rejoice”). The shift from the purple of the Season to PINK (or rose) for the third Sunday Advent candle reflects the lessening emphasis on penitence as attention turned more to celebration of the season. My prayer for you this PINK week of Advent is that you are able to celebrate in a most joyful way your friends, family and faith as you rejoice in all the sights, sounds and blessings around you!
Blessings and JOY in HIM who helps us Think PINK!

Tammy
