She Let Herself Go

Just upon reading those four words, “She let herself go,” multiple images come to mind, usually negative ones. Perhaps, she is not taking care of herself or has gained weight. She isn’t physically looking her best.

But, if we consider these same four words in a different way, an entirely separate image comes to light. What if she let herself go on a run, or on a trip she has been dreaming of. What if she let herself break free from the self-inflicting demands of her overly-committed life and lets herself go on a retreat. Then, “letting herself go” doesn’t conjure up such a negative image.

In addition, these same four words in the spiritual life paint, not an unattractive picture, but a beautiful one. Letting go is a good thing when we are releasing insecurities, physical worldliness, resentment, fear and unforgiveness.

Many of us aspire to walk in spiritual shoes, but we forget how easy it is to become intoxicated by the negative pulls that exist in the material side of the world. We can see past these challenges, though, as we stay connected to one another in our spiritual relationships.

Next time you hear someone say, “She has really let herself go.” You can smile and say, “Good for her! I need to do more of that myself.” And then proceed to LET YOURSELF GO~ to God.
